You Don’t Have to Be the Expert

We’re the brains of this operation. You pay for infrastructure that works and for someone who keeps it working on the active platform. If legal restrictions ever force a distribution change, we will not strand deployed systems. We will document and freeze the legacy stack, provide a structured handoff plan, and transition maintenance so operators can continue supporting that older distribution while we move the mainline repo. The software stack is open and forkable, and the proprietary side (manufacturing and provisioning) has contingencies so the HOMESERVER offering can continue.

Licensing

What ships on your device is open source and modifiable. Third-party components keep their original licenses. The HOMESERVER website code is Business Source License 1.1 (converts to GPL v3.0 three years after each version release). All other HOMESERVER LLC components are GPL v3.0. Manufacturing and provisioning are proprietary to HOMESERVER LLC. More in Licensing.

Buyer Beware

Beyond the provided GUI, you need technical competence or AI assistance. The complexity is intentional. This is professional infrastructure, not a consumer gadget. You’re welcome to ssh in and explore.

Radical Ownership

You own it completely. Upon receipt, the hardware is yours with no restrictions. Full root access. We retain zero control and no telemetry. We cannot remotely access, troubleshoot, or update your device by design. You’re responsible for maintenance, updates via the GUI, and troubleshooting. GitHub issues are welcome for our components; third-party support is between you and those projects. Because everything is on GitHub, the device can be rebuilt piece by piece if needed. We source solid hardware so you don’t have to.
Mainline SKU: fan-cooled Intel N100 mini-PC (4-core 3.4GHz, at least 8GB DDR4, at least 256GB SSD, dual 1Gb/s NIC), thermal- and endurance-tested before ship.
In the box: mini-PC, preconfigured lay-flat USB 3 drive enclosure with NAS-grade hard drive (drive chosen for long-term use as attached storage), user manual, Ethernet cable.
